What is COFEPRIS in charge of?
The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS) in Mexico is a decentralized administrative body of the Ministry of Health, in charge of protecting the population against health risks. Its main functions include:
Health Regulation and Control
COFEPRIS regulates and controls products and services, including food, beverages, medications, medical devices, cosmetics, tobacco products, and more, ensuring that they meet established health and safety standards.
It is responsible for granting authorizations for the marketing and advertising of products and services that may have an impact on health, based on the evaluation of their safety, effectiveness and quality.
Inspection and Surveillance
Carry out inspections and surveillance actions to verify compliance with health standards in establishments such as factories, hospitals, pharmacies, and other places where products and services of health interest are handled.
Health Risk Control
Acts in the event of health emergencies and risks to public health, implementing preventive and corrective measures to protect the population.
Promotes safe practices in the production, marketing and consumption of goods and services, including the dissemination of relevant information for the prevention of health risks.
Collaborate with international organizations and regulatory agencies in other countries to align health standards and facilitate the exchange of information on health risks.
Investigation and development
Supports and promotes research to improve health regulation and the development of new technologies and products that contribute to public health.
